Welcome to Kalannie
Kalannie is a rural town in the Shire of Dalwallinu, in the North Eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 259 kilometres (161 miles) north-east of the state capital, Perth.
Kalannie is in heart of Western Australia’s largest wheat producing area. Other grains produced include oats, barley, cereal rye, triticale, peas and lupins. Sheep are farmed for meat and wool. The Kalannie townsite features industries and businesses associated with agriculture, residential housing, community and recreational facilities. Oil mallee trees are harvested to produce high quality eucalyptus oil. Agricultural and industrial grade gypsum is mined at Lake Hillman, north east of Kalannie.
The Kalannie Community Telecentre
The Kalannie Community Telecentre Inc. is a non-profit organisation, established to provide the local community with information computer technology and other services otherwise not available within our township.
The Kalannie Telecentre is a valuable resource and service centre within the local community. By offering secretarial, design, printing and publishing services we work to preserve the sustainability of local business and community groups. Similarly, we promote the generation of local employment by providing access to educational and training opportunities. Communication technologies at the Telecentre, such as internet and videoconferencing, close the divide of distance between Kalannie and other rural and metropolitan centres.
Kalannie Telecentre is an access point for important government services; Medicare and Centrelink.
To share important news with the local residents, and to strengthen local community identity, we produce a monthly paper The Kaltel News, and a weekly newsletter The Kalannie Kapers.
The Kalannie Telecentre is managed and owned by the local community. Volunteers form the backbone of our organisation, ranging from the Management Committee through to community members participating in projects, planning, and the general office duties. The Telecentre provides employment for two Coordinators on a part-time basis.
The Kalannie Telecentre, part of the Telecentre Network, is partly supported by the Department of Local Government and Regional Development through the Telecentre Support Branch. The Telecentre Network consists of over 100 Telecentres across Western Australia. All Telecentres share the same purpose, to provide our local communities with current information technology and other support services to ensure that small rural communities are not disadvantaged due to geographical location.
